"The Ocean is my Sanctuary"

- Home - Questions?? - Archive - Mobile - RSS

This is a blog that focuses on the ocean and everything that lives in it, that is happening to it, and what you can do to help protect it. Going back to school to get my marine bio degree, and so I keep my focus on my goals here. Avid diver currently stuck in the desert, so definitely dive frustrated. If you have any questions or things you'd like me to post more about just let me know! Also, I own nothing on here.

Yellowfin Tuna(Thunnus albacares)
If you are a seafood lover, you’ve probably seen this fish before.  Yellowfin tuna is also called ahi or maguro, and is usually a good alternative to bluefin tuna and other fish with high mercury levels, depending on where it is caught.  If you are concerned about the methods used to catching fish, watch out with these guys.  Not all Yellowfin producers use ocean friendly methods.  Your most sustainable option is the troll-pole Yellowfin.  Yellowfin are one largest of the tuna species, reaching an upwards of 300 lbs.  They are found right above the thermocline in the sea, but have been known to dive deeper on occasion.  They’re known to feed upon squid, pelagic crustaceans, and other fish.
From my experience working at the Kim Holland Shark Lab in Oahu, I was able to swim and interact with these tuna on dozens of occasions.  I was responsible for cleaning it’s pen and feeding it.  We mostly used squid for it’s diet - it never liked reef fish.  They were my favourite creatures I got to work with at the lab, aside from the scalloped hammerheads.
Also if you’d like to know more about sustainable fishing and fish safe to eat, check the website monteraybayaquarium.org and click Seafood Watch under the Save the Oceans tab.  You can ever get a free download for safe fish to eat in your area!
